Air fryer racks and trays let you cook more at once or separate the food so the air circulates better. They're a simple accessory, but it pays to choose one with your basket's measurements in front of you.
What they're for
- Second-level rack. Lets you place food on two levels, for example vegetables below and protein above.
- Suitable tray or dish. Works for recipes with sauce or batter, like a cake in a pan.
- Support rack. Lifts the food off the bottom and lets air pass underneath.
How to choose them
- Measure the inside of your basket or drawer, not just the advertised diameter.
- Check the material and that it's suitable for the cooking temperature and, if that matters to you, for the dishwasher.
- Check the height so the food doesn't touch the heating element.
- Avoid piling up: two levels with little airflow don't cook better than one well-spread level.
Combine them with perforated liners and check the times in the approximate cooking times chart.
Common mistakes with racks
- Filling them to the top. If the food touches the heating element or leaves no gaps, it burns or doesn't brown.
- Choosing the wrong size. A rack that doesn't sit properly moves around with the airflow.
- Forgetting to clean them. Racks collect grease at the joints; wash them after every use.
Frequently asked questions
Will any rack work in my air fryer?
No. It has to fit in your basket, be suitable for high temperature and not touch the heating element. Measure before you buy.
Can I cook on two levels at once?
Yes on many models, but the times change. Watch the height of each level and don't pile the food up.
Can they go in the dishwasher?
It depends on the material and the manufacturer. Check the product's instructions.
